Aizu Kinmushikui-nuri is a traditional lacquerware technique from the Aizu region. It involves applying black lacquer, scattering barley or rice husks, drying them, and then removing them. After that, gold leaf or silver powder is applied, followed by more lacquer and polishing. This technique creates irregular patterns resembling insect-eaten marks, giving it a unique texture.
Currently, it is designated as a national traditional craft, producing lacquerware with various techniques such as raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), urushi-e (lacquer painting), kanshitsu (dry lacquer), maki-e (gold lacquer decoration), and hananuri (flower lacquer).
