--------------------
The Kagura masks (Omotesama) used in Takachiho's Yokagura are sacred masks that serve as a divine vessel for the gods to descend during sacred rituals, which are designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan. These expressive masks are also popular as gifts for good fortune and warding off evil.
Features and Overview of Yokagura Masks (Omotesama)
Sacred Divine Vessel: They represent the faces of the gods (such as Tajikarao-no-Mikoto and Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto) danced in Yokagura and are treated with reverence as the gods themselves.
Diverse Expressions: They convey joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, playing a crucial role in telling the stories of Kagura.
Auspicious Item/Decoration: They are displayed in home altars and other places as auspicious items for bringing good fortune and warding off evil.
