US NAVY DIAMONDBACKS VFA-102 Japan Deployment Anniversary Large Iwakuni
Purchased at MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day
This is a patch commemorating the Japan deployment of the US Navy's Strike Fighter Squadron 102 (VFA-102) Diamondbacks.
Rattlesnake (Diamondback): This is the squadron's nickname. Its aggressive posture, ready to strike its prey, symbolizes the strength of a fighter squadron.
Red Diamond: The red marking on the snake's back is the pattern on its back that inspired the unit's name and is VFA-102's trademark.
Left and Right Flags: Proof of Japan Deployment The most distinctive feature of this patch is the two flags depicted within the wing-like shapes spreading out to the left and right. VFA-102 has long been based at Atsugi Air Base in Kanagawa Prefecture and Iwakuni Air Base in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This design expresses the Japan-US Alliance and Affection for Japan.
Ties to Japan: The squadron belongs to Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5), which is based at MCAS Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is a very popular unit at air festivals in Japan.
