It is used as a tea ceremony utensil and a Buddhist altar fitting. Although it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, it plays an important role in expressing the sense of season and the host's aesthetic sense.
Main Uses and Roles
As a tea ceremony utensil: It holds incense to be placed in the hearth or brazier during the charcoal-laying ceremony. It may also be displayed in the tokonoma (alcove) of the tea room, symbolizing the purification of the space and the hospitality offered to guests.
As a Buddhist altar fitting: It is used as a container for incense for burning, powdered incense, or anointing incense (zukō).
