■Yakumo Lacquerware
In the early Meiji period, lacquer craftsman Heiichi Sakata of Matsue was inspired by Chinese lacquerware and named it Yakumo Lacquerware, after the ancient Izumo poem Yakumo Tatsu (meaning eight clouds rise).
After drawing patterns on the lacquered base using various colored lacquers, mother-of-pearl, gold, and silver powder, several layers of high-quality natural transparent lacquer are applied. The piece is then finished by polishing using traditional techniques.
As years pass, this transparent lacquer increases in clarity, causing the drawn patterns to emerge vibrantly. This is the most distinctive feature of Yakumo Lacquerware, setting it apart from other production areas.
