Tsugaru lacquerware confectionary bowl, Kara-nuri
This is a confectionery bowl (kashibachi) made with Tsugaru-nuri, a traditional craft representing Aomori Prefecture.
Tsugaru-nuri is a traditional lacquerware with a history of over 300 years, dating back to the mid-Edo period.
The speckled pattern visible on the outside of the bowl is created using the Kara-nuri technique, the most representative of Tsugaru-nuri. By applying dozens of layers of lacquer and then polishing them until flat, a deep and fantastical pattern is born.
