Chinshu is a lacquerware technique and the resulting artwork where a design, such as a peony, is expressed by carving into a layer of red lacquer (shu-urushi) applied to the surface of lacquerware. It is particularly known as Chinshu Botan-bori (Chinshu peony carving) and is used for bowls, tiered boxes, and trays in traditional crafts like Echizen lacquerware and Wajima lacquerware.
