Kiyomizu-yaki (Kiyomizu ware) is a general term for traditional pottery and porcelain produced in Kyoto Prefecture. Originally, it referred to items fired around Gojo-zaka, the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, but it is now established as Kyo-yaki/Kiyomizu-yaki along with Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware) fired in Kyoto.
Key features and background are as follows:
Diverse Styles: Its greatest characteristic is that it is not bound by specific techniques or clay. Having developed alongside the tea ceremony culture, works with unique personalities, ranging from delicate paintings to bold forms, are created by individual artists and workshops.
Advanced Craftsmanship: Often, the entire process is done by hand, with high skill condensed into each piece.
History: Its origins date back to the early Edo period, around 1600 (Keicho era), and it was once primarily used for daily tableware.
Current Production Areas: Kilns are spread throughout Kyoto, including Gojo-zaka and the area around Sennyu-ji in Higashiyama Ward, as well as Kiyomizu-yaki no Sato (Kiyomizu-yaki Danchi) in Yamashina Ward, and Kōyama in Uji City.
