Yamanaka lacquerware is made in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is also called Yamanaka Shikki.
It is one of the three major lacquerware production areas in the prefecture, alongside Wajima for lacquering and Kanazawa for maki-e, with Yamanaka for wood turning. Yamanaka has a long history of woodturners, boasting the largest production volume in Japan for turned wood products.
A key characteristic of Yamanaka lacquerware, which utilizes wood grain to express a natural texture, is the tateki-dori (vertical wood cutting) method, where the shape of the vessel is taken in the direction of the wood's growth. This results in durable lacquerware that is resistant to warping due to drying, allowing for exquisite finishes not only on bowls but also on thinly turned items and lidded containers. Furthermore, decorative turning, such as applying various patterns to the wood, has led to the creation of Yamanaka lacquerware with unique and meticulously crafted details.
