Negoro-nuri is a traditional craft that is said to have originated with the monks of Negoro-ji Temple in Wakayama Prefecture during the Kamakura period, who created it for daily use. Its most distinctive feature is the unique technique of applying black lacquer as a base coat, followed by a layer of vermilion lacquer.

While it appears as a vibrant vermilion when new, its most remarkable characteristic lies in being used over time.

With daily use and care, the vermilion lacquer will gradually wear away, revealing the black lacquer underneath.
The bold carved patterns on this katakuchi bowl further accentuate the contrast between red and black, evoking a powerful sense of traditional Japanese beauty.
