Description
An antique needlework lace tapestry from Italy, dating back to the 18th-19th century, featuring angel and floral motifs.

This decorative doily, crafted using techniques like Cantù lace, is perfect for use as a tray cloth or for framing. It comes with a blue linen fabric for framing backgrounds.

The piece depicts a gentle scene of a child angel carrying or holding flowers, as if bringing them from a lush meadow or garden, framed in four layers.

This technique involves using a needle and hands to manipulate and layer thin (bobbin-made) tape, creating curves and flowing lines to form beautiful, symbolic natural motifs such as plants and wings, which are intricately woven into this piece.

A core principle of this technique is the absence of cuts or endings. Each part is made to appear eternal, while the spaces are bridged with finely woven threads, like bobbin lace, creating a leaf-like or net-like connection. It seeks to embody infinity and the eternal nature of beautiful representations.

The composition is symmetrical on the top, bottom, left, and right, with the exception of the angel. It is meticulously crafted with regularity and balance, embodying wishes for peace, stability, and tranquility.

The piece features two layers of curved diamond (flower-shaped) frames, expanding to 12 sides from the third layer. The four frames gently embrace the motifs, with delicate, arabesque-like floral patterns that are serene and graceful.

Cantù lace originated in the hilly, lake-filled region north of Milan, and is an elaborate technique that involves curving thin linen threads to form motifs.

The color is a subdued, deep ivory/ecru with pale gray, khaki, and beige undertones, as if time has cast its hue upon it.

It has a soft, smooth, and supple texture. It is likely made from high-quality linen thread only, or a blend of linen and cotton.

Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements below.

Length: 27 cm
Width (top): 17.5 cm & (maximum): 18 cm

Blue linen fabric: Approx. 31 cm (height) & 31 cm (width)

While there are some minor thread plays and slightly loosened stitches, there appear to be no noticeable stains, tears, or rips.

Considering its age, it is in very good condition. Given the immense effort invested in its creation, we hope it will be cherished for many years to come.

We would be delighted if it brings joy to someone who appreciates it. ✧
