Antique Italian delicate and cool linen lace bobbin lace with three-dimensional flowers and leaves

Antique linen lace purchased in Italy.

A graceful and refreshing round doily, approximately 22cm in diameter, featuring Maltese lace techniques incorporated into floral designs, dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The layered petals of the flowers bloom three-dimensionally with a lustrous sheen. Diamond and square shapes resembling leaf veins are arranged, creating a design where leaves surround the flowers. The openwork frame drawn in linear patterns and the linear motifs filling the spaces add a cool, airy feel.

Originating from the island of Malta, south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, the region is famous for its pale golden, lustrous, egg-yolk colored silk threads. This piece, however, is crafted from fine, strong linen threads in a gentle, delicate light beige and sand beige, reminiscent of natural flax color. It has a smooth, flowing, and crisp texture.

The flowers appear as a slightly whitish ecru, and the material might be a mix of linen, or linen and silk, or silk in different sections.

The rim features petal-like scallops, designed to resemble the cross-section of flowers like carnations viewed from the side.

This delicate and elegant piece, woven with dozens of Maltese bobbins, leaves a strong impression of coolness and refinement.

It is in beautiful, clean condition, appearing unused, with no scratches or stains. There are some areas on the rim where a slight color change can be perceived, but overall, it is very beautiful. As this is an item that has passed through time and human hands, please allow for minor imperfections that do not affect its use.

The texture of the excellent threads, with their subtle, gentle sheen and sparkle, is woven with varying degrees of tightness and looseness for a cool effect.

This is a versatile and useful size. Perfect for tables, chests, cabinets, shelves, entryways, alcoves, etc. It would be lovely used under vases, photo frames, objets d'art, tableware, antique bisque dolls, mignonettes, or dolls.
