Yawatauma are traditional wooden carved horses from the Nanbu region, centered around Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, and have been made for a long time.

In 1997, they were designated as a traditional craft of Aomori Prefecture.

There are various theories about their origin, but it is believed that they originated from the fact that this was originally a production area for the excellent Nanbu Horse, and wooden carved horses were created to wish for the healthy growth of beloved horses.
They have become beloved folk crafts that wish for the happiness of children and families, and are popular as Fukuma (lucky horses) from Hachinohe, making them ideal as souvenirs, gifts, and for various celebrations.

This year is the Year of the Horse.
Horses have auspicious imagery such as everything goes well, to leap over, and to dash through, so they are often given as commemorative gifts for celebrations.

It is said that in the Nanbu region, which was famous as a horse-producing area for a long time, these were made to resemble the appearance of excellent horses participating in Yabusame (equestrian archery) dedicated at Kushi-biki Hachimangu Shrine.
