● Features
Sedge craft is a traditional folk craft passed down in the Hiramaru district of Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture. It is a craft made by weaving dried sedge, a plant of the sedge family, into shapes such as zodiac animals and horses. It began as a winter side job for farmers in the snow country and is now designated as an intangible cultural property of Myoko City. Its characteristics are its simple yet delicate modeling and realistic craftsmanship that changes with each zodiac animal.
