Description
This is a papier-mâché tiger, a traditional folk toy from Izumo, Shimane Prefecture.
It is a very precious item, as this type of folk craft is no longer produced.
The head sways charmingly from side to side.
Izumo papier-mâché is made using traditional techniques that have been passed down since the Edo period, and this tiger is characterized by its powerful expression. The tiger is said to travel a thousand miles in a day and return in a thousand miles, and has long been cherished as an auspicious item to ward off evil and wish for the healthy growth of children.
From the late Edo period, it was customary to give a papier-mâché tiger for a boy's first Hina Matsuri, wishing for his healthy growth and success like a tiger.
Even today, it is widely used not only for celebrations but also as a protective charm for traffic safety and as a traditional folk craft.
Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by artisans, with striking eyes and carefully crafted fangs. The body's patterns also convey a warmth unique to hand-painting.
It has an impactful presence and will enhance your interior decor.
It would also be suitable as a New Year's decoration or as a protective charm.
