How about replacing a plastic nut?
Even with an inexpensive ukulele, simply replacing the plastic with cow bone will significantly improve the sound.

Replacement

Ukuleles come in various sizes.
If the replacement part is larger than the original, it can be shaved down. However, if it is smaller, there is nothing that can be done, so please check the size carefully.

Installation requires adjusting the string height, as well as processing to adjust the width of the saddle and nut.

Please note that this requires a certain level of skill.
