This is a tea chest that has been stored long-term in a storage room.
It was originally used to store kimonos, so the word 着物 (kimono) is written in marker on the side of the box.
The inside is made of tin, offering excellent moisture and insect resistance: features originally designed to protect the aroma of tea are now highly useful for storing clothing (like kimonos), dried goods, precision equipment such as cameras, and documents.
