Description
This item is a vintage metal candlestick holder designed in the style of a traditional Shona headreast. Design Inspiration: It is modeled after the hand-carved wooden headrests (mutsago) historically crafted by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. While traditional tribal headrests are made of wood, this decorative variation is cast in a metallic alloy, typically textured aluminum or pewter. The upward curved upper platform features two stylized cups on either end specifically designed to hold standard taper candles. Cultural Symbolism of Shona Headrests In Shona culture, functional headrests served deeply personal, social, and spiritual roles: They elevated the head to protect elaborate, intricately braided coiffures during sleep. Because they were associated with sleep and dreams, headrests were viewed as conduits for communicating with ancestor spirits (mudzimu). They were highly valued personal possessions and were frequently buried with their owners. The central support pillars typically showcase geometric patterns-such as the circular and triangular motifs seen here-which often reflect regional style, prestige, and symbols of the female gender or marital maturity. The candle holer is approximately 9.5 inches across and 5 inches high and in good vintage condition.
