[Artwork Description]
This depicts the area corresponding to present-day Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It portrays the Imakiri no Watashi ferry crossing at Maisaka.
The leading boat, covered with a curtain, is a pleasure boat carrying a procession of feudal lords. The time appears to be around dusk, with the western sky beginning to darken. In the following boats, attendants known as nakama can be seen yawning or curled up asleep. Ahead, the New Residence checkpoint (Shin'ai no Sekisho) is visible.
This checkpoint was under the direct control of the shogunate and was known for its particularly strict inspections. The ferry landing was located within the checkpoint.
