Kilbourne Hole NM Mantle Xenolith Peridotite Olivine Geology Rock Specimen
N/A
Authentic upper-mantle xenolith from Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico, a well-known volcanic maar locality near El Paso, Texas. Kilbourne Hole is famous for mantle material that was carried rapidly to the surface during volcanic activity. This specimen is an olivine-rich peridotite mantle xenolith with an attractive exposed crystalline interior showing abundant green olivine and contrasting darker minerals. The weathered exterior provides a nice contrast with the fresh broken surface. Kilbourne Hole mantle xenoliths can include lherzolite, harzburgite, dunite and related ultramafic rocks. This specimen has not been petrographically or chemically analyzed, so I am not assigning a more specific peridotite classification. An excellent display or teaching specimen illustrating material derived from Earth's upper mantle. Locality: Kilbourne Hole, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA Rock type: Peridotite / mantle xenolith Primary visible mineral: Olivine Provenance: Personally collected at Kilbourne Hole approximately 26 years ago. Please see photos for exact size, appearance and condition.
