Description
Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period, known as a master of shasei (realistic sketching) and the founder of the Maruyama school.

■ Brief Biography
1733 (Kyōhō 18): Born in Ano village, Ika county, Tanba province (present-day Kameoka city, Kyoto prefecture).
His surname was Maruyama, his given name was Yoshimasa, and his art name was Okyo. In his youth, he moved to Kyoto and became a disciple of Yūtei Ishida, a spectacle maker from Owari, where he learned to paint toys and the Kano school style of painting.
He was active as a painter for Prince Yukitsune of Enman-in Monzeki.
He gained fame for his style that rejected the idealization of Chinese painting and emphasized shasei, observing familiar nature.
His unique, gentle, and soft style brought innovation to the art world of the Edo period.
He produced a wide range of works including realistic sketches, bird-and-flower paintings, animal paintings, ghost paintings, and figure paintings, and left behind many screen and wall paintings.
1795 (Kansei 7): Died in Kyoto.
Age 63. His grave is located at Nison-in temple in Kyoto, among others.

■ Main Features and Achievements
Introduced realistic depictions based on reality, in contrast to the formalistic styles of the traditional Kano school.
Particularly famous works include the Folding Screen with Snow-Covered Pine (Important Cultural Property), Scroll of Realistic Sketches, and Ghost Painting.
His disciples included Goshun (Matsumura Gekkei), and his lineage developed into the Shijo school.
The Maruyama school, originating from Okyo's lineage, remained a dominant force in the Kyoto art scene from the late Edo period through the Meiji period, exerting significant influence.
