★This tenugui features the Yoshiwara Tsumugi pattern, a classic and auspicious design.
A tenugui is the best choice for a handkerchief when wearing a kimono or yukata. When wearing a yukata in the summer, it looks lovely draped around the neck like a collar (see image 1 for an example). The Yoshiwara Tsumugi pattern is unisex and looks striking in this application.
★What is Yoshiwara Tsumugi?
Yoshiwara Tsumugi is a pattern created by connecting shapes with indented corners to form stripes. The formal name for Yoshiwara Tsumugi is Komochi Yoshiwara, and it was used as a pattern on the noren (curtain) of guide teahouses in Yoshiwara.
As a representative pattern of Edo, it is still used today for festivals, happi coats, Hand towel, yukata, and more.
★What is the origin of the name Yoshiwara Tsumugi?
The name Yoshiwara Tsumugi originates from the name of Yoshiwara, the largest red-light district in the Edo period. The name was given because once you stepped into the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, it was difficult to leave.
