Boasting the fastest speed in Shohoku, his strengths lie in his speed play, utilizing his high athletic ability and small stature, centered around game-making with fast breaks and techniques.
He also has good jumping ability, making it not difficult to block shots even with a height difference of about 10cm. On the other hand, his mid-range and long-range jump shot accuracy seems to be a weakness.

He is the player who shines the most in unseen ways within the team. When teammates are flustered, he has the mental strength to rally everyone (even when he himself is flustered). He is observant of those around him, perhaps due to his role as point guard, as seen in how well he handles Sakuragi and how considerate he is when passing to the injured Rukawa.

After his return, he was a substitute in his first game against Miuradai, but thereafter, he is the only one among the starting five who is not seen being substituted out or ejected (Mitsui and Rukawa run out of stamina, Akagi is injured, Hanamichi is fouled out with 5 fouls, injured, etc.).

In the original manga's finale, he succeeds Akagi and Kogure, who retired, as the new captain of the basketball club.
