This is a vintage Firth Stainless steel knife, manufactured in Sheffield, England, specifically retailed by the historic London department store A.W. Gamage Ltd..Historic Maker and Retailer MarksA.W. Gamage Ltd. (London): Gamages was a beloved, massive department store located in Holborn, London, which operated from 1878 until 1972. During the 1920s and 1930s, Gamages regularly commissioned high-quality cutlery directly from top manufacturers in Sheffield to be stamped and sold under their own proprietary brand name.Sheffield Make: This stamp guarantees that the blade was forged in Sheffield, England, which has been the global epicenter of world-class cutlery production since the 14th century. Firth Stainless: This is one of the most historically important marks in modern metallurgy. Harry Brearley accidentally invented rustless steel in 1913 while working at the Brown-Firth Research Laboratories in Sheffield. Thomas Firth & Sons pioneered the first commercial production of stainless steel knives under this exact Firth Stainless trade name.Estimated AgeBased on the specific styling of the Gamage crest, the blocky Firth Stainless typography, and historical lawsuit records from 1924 regarding Gamages' licensing of Firth steel, this knife most likely dates back to the 1920s or 1930s. I am told by original owner that this has nine handles but I can’t guarantee. 369
