Te-no-uchi refers to the action of the hand that creates the correct blade path in Kendo and Iaido. In Kendo and Iaido, Te-no-uchi is the action from the palm to the upper arm for striking the target accurately, quickly, and powerfully with the monouchi (sweet spot) of the sword or bamboo sword. It is essential basic training for mastering Jizai no Ken (free sword) and Kire/Sae (sharpness/clarity), such as seizing the initiative (Saki no Sen or Go no Sen).

Thinking about how to train Te-no-uchi at home, even while watching TV in the living room, I devised and created a small sword made of cast aluminum. The weight is approximately 900g, similar to a Japanese sword, and the length is about 63cm, which is short enough to avoid hitting the ceiling in apartments with low ceilings. I experimented with the grip to find a thickness that allows for some play in the Te-no-uchi while still enabling a firm grip on the blade path. With this, I can swing it freely in my living room or hallway without any problems. Furthermore, by repeating the actions shown in attached images ① and ② with one hand, either left or right, whenever you have a little time, you can train your wrists and Te-no-uchi.
