Yoh Shomei (葉 祥明)
Born in Kumamoto in 1946. Published his first picture book, Shiroi Tori no Boku no Benchi (The White Bird on My Bench), in 1972. In 1990, he received the Graphics Award at the Bologna International Children's Book Fair in Italy for Kaze to Hyou (Wind and Hail). In 1991, the Yoh Shomei Museum of Art opened in Kita-Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1997, his picture book Jirai de wa Naku Hana wo Kudasai (Please Give Me Flowers, Not Landmines) won the Reader's Award at the Japan Picture Book Award. In 2000, his picture book Ano Natsu no Hi (That Summer Day), which deals with the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, received the Encouragement Prize at the 6th Peace Communication Journalists Fund Award. In 2002, he opened the Yoh Shomei Aso Highland Picture Book Museum in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, the origin of his picture book creation.
