Domenichino (real name Domenico Zampieri) was a leading painter of the High Baroque period in 17th-century Italy, representing the Bolognese School.

This copperplate engraving was created in the 18th century by printmaker Jacob Frey, based on a circular decorative painting by Domenichino, originally created in 1628 for the church of San Silvestro al Quirinale in Rome.

Frey, born in Switzerland in 1681, moved to Rome in 1702 to begin his career.
Initially, he produced his own works, but gradually dedicated his excellent skills to creating prints of masterpieces by past great artists, earning high acclaim in various countries.

This work depicts a story from the Old Testament book of Samuel.
It shows the young shepherd David triumphing over the giant soldier Goliath, who stood over 3 meters tall, and celebrating his victorious return.

David walks with his beloved harp in hand.
People play musical instruments, celebrating the hero who would later become the King of Israel.
The sheep rushing towards their master who has finally returned, and the man desperately trying to hold them back, add a sense of realism.
From the delicate expressions of the crowd to the drapery of the clothing and the lush vegetation, everything is rendered with superb detail.
This is a masterpiece that transcends time, a collaboration between Domenichino's elegant and dramatic original work and Frey's outstanding reproductive skill.

At the bottom of the print, there is an inscription indicating that it was created by Domenichino and Frey.

The piece is framed in a gold frame approximately 4 cm wide with a floral pattern, paired with a beige mat and a nameplate.
As this is an antique frame, there are signs of age such as minor scratches, dents, and retouching in places.

Furthermore, as this work is over 270 years old since its publication, the sheet itself exhibits some slight yellowing, foxing, and waviness.
While we have judged these to be barely noticeable for display purposes, please understand these as characteristics of antique prints.

Please note that due to photographic limitations, the actual color may differ slightly from the images shown.
