Paul AIZPIRI (1919-2016)
Born to a father of Basque descent who was a sculptor, he began painting from childhood in a privileged environment. He entered the Paris School of Fine Arts at age 17, held his first solo exhibition in Paris at 24, and was appointed a member of the Salon d'Automne at 26, receiving high acclaim from a young age. His style, characterized by boldly simplified brushwork and an abundance of rich colors, matured into an increasingly free and vigorous artistic expression.
Aïzpiri has been cherished by collectors worldwide for many years, and his works are housed in prominent museums in France, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, as well as in museums across Europe, including Belgium and the Netherlands. In Japan, his works are held in museums such as the Yamagata Museum of Art and the NAKADA MUSEUM (Aïzpiri Museum) in Onomichi City. He is also known for his fresco paintings adorning the hall walls of the Hotel New Otani (Tokyo and Hakata).
