Description
Antique German pectoral crucifix featuring a dual-tone design. It is constructed with a cast metal frame—traditionally brass or bronze with nickel/German silver plating—and fitted with a dark wood inlay, typically ebony or stained pearwood. Dual Meanings of the Skull and Crossbones The skull and crossbones emblem at the base of the cross is a standard historical Catholic design known as a Golgotha motif or a Memento Mori: The Burial of Adam: Christian tradition holds that the crucifixion took place directly over the burial site of Adam, the first man. When the ground split during the crucifixion, Christ's blood allegedly washed over Adam's skull. This symbolizes the washing away of original sin and the redemption of humanity. Victory Over Death: It serves as a visual literalization of Christ conquering death by death. The reminder of mortality (Memento Mori) encourages the believer to focus on the eternal soul rather than earthly life. History & Origin: Being stamped Germany or Made in Germany indicates it was manufactured in Germany primarily for export or widespread distribution before or during the World War eras. Such large, heavy-duty crosses were traditionally worn as pectoral crosses by clergy, monks, or nuns, or used on heavy personal rosaries. While it is difficult to pinpoint an exact manufacture date from a photo, this specific style of German metal-framed crucifix allows us to narrow down the timeline:1880s–1920s (Antique): Germany
