(Product Explanation)
This is a vivid depiction of the scene where the British were first granted an audience with the Sultan of Borneo, published in the British newspaper The Illustrated London News on August 29, 1903. It illustrates the audience granted in 1842 to the British explorer James Brooke. This print is based on a work by the British painter Richard Caton Woodville (with a printed signature in the bottom left corner of the image) and was steel engraved for publication in the 1903 issue.
It was treated as an important piece, occupying a full page of the newspaper, and is a valuable scene of international news that conveys an important event of the time.
The Sultan is seated in what appears to be a throne-like seat in the center, surrounded by guards and local people. Beside the Sultan, the gentleman looking at a document and about to sign it is Brooke. He was later granted the right to govern Sarawak, received the title of White Rajah, and established the Brooke dynasty.
How about this for collectors of illustrations from the London newspaper The Illustrated London News, or for those who are interested in the history and scenery of Southeast Asia, particularly Indochina? I hope you will enjoy it by framing it to your liking.
