● Description
Noboto-ura from Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji depicts the coast of Chiba City, Chuo Ward, Chiba Prefecture, along Tokyo Bay, which is now reclaimed land. Mount Fuji can be seen through a large torii gate in the center of the image, and the lively scene of people and children enjoying shell gathering is vividly expressed.
Background
In the Edo period, Noboto-ura was a transportation hub for transporting tribute rice and seafood from the Boso Peninsula to Edo, and its shallow sea was a famous spot for shell gathering. The torii gate of Noboto Shrine (or Inage Sengen Shrine) is a distinctive feature, and Hokusai may have drawn this scene based on his experience visiting the area around the 3rd year of Bunka (around 1806).
Compositional Ingenuity
The composition is exquisitely balanced with large and small torii gates arranged in a similar shape, framing Mount Fuji. The distribution of the sea and land, and the movements of the working fishermen and playing families are all calculated. Mount Fuji, covered in spring snow, stands quietly in the distance.
