Guitar, Bass Fret Leveling Set
This is a fret leveling set for guitars and basses.
Set Contents:
Leveling plate (approx. 30cm)
Small leveling plate (approx. 10cm)
Fret side file
String height adjustment stainless steel rod (rubber base)
The leveling plate is made of highly accurate aluminum.
Many leveling plates from StewMac and other brands are 9 inches (approx. 23cm), but a 30cm plate makes it easier to achieve higher accuracy and is suitable for both guitars and basses.
The U-shaped design allows for fret leveling while strings are still tensioned, as shown in images 7 and 8.
Leveling without string tension requires an accurate assessment of the neck and fret conditions. However, leveling with string tension allows you to accurately level only the high frets by simply moving the plate back and forth, achieving professional-level results.
The small plate is useful for leveling protruding frets or frets on the higher side of the neck. If you want to lower the string height, level the entire fretboard first, then further level only the higher frets. When leveling only the higher frets, do not move the plate back and forth; move it only from the bridge side towards the nut. When leveling only the higher frets, loosen the strings.
Depending on the amount of leveling required, if you notice any snagging on the fret sides after leveling, use the included file to round them off.
Fret Leveling Method:
Check the neck condition with a straight edge.
Instead of holding down the strings and looking for gaps, use a straight edge to check for light passing through to accurately identify any forward or backward bowing.
If there is bowing, adjust the truss rod.
Adjust string height if necessary.
A slight forward bow (a gap of a few sheets of paper around the 9th fret) is ideal when the instrument is in tune.
Insert the stainless steel rod for string height adjustment at the nut, and level the frets in two-string sections (3 passes total). Once the entire fretboard is evenly filed, remove the tube and check for buzzing or rattling.
If there is buzzing or rattling, repeat the leveling process or use the small plate for partial leveling.
Once buzzing and rattling are eliminated, use #400-600 sandpaper to remove scratches and finish with compound.
Use masking tape on the fretboard.
The sandpaper is 320 grit, which is not too coarse and makes subsequent finishing easier.
The sandpaper is durable and is attached to both sides of the leveling plate, not just the bottom, allowing for leveling of approximately 5-8 instruments without replacement. Consider this set if you own multiple guitars or basses.
