Takashi Asahina (1932-2022)
Born in Hiroshima City in 1932. Survived the atomic bombing in Hiroshima City (5km from the hypocenter) in 1945. Engaged in relief activities immediately after.
Moved to Tokyo in 1951 and enrolled in Chuo University. While enrolled, he exhibited at the Kodo-ten exhibition and dropped out of university to travel to the United States.
Completed studies at ART STUDENT OF N.Y (Harry Stineberg's class) from 1959-1961. In 1962, began producing serigraphs (silk screen prints) at the PRATT INSTITUTE printmaking studio. In 1968, held solo exhibitions at the Mook Gallery in France, among others. Subsequently, his works were purchased for the permanent collection of the Seattle Art Museum, and he was active in exhibitions such as the Boston Printmakers Exhibition and the Society of American Graphic Artists. Moved to France in 1971. Returned to Japan in 1972. Held numerous solo exhibitions at galleries nationwide and at Ueno Matsuzakaya, etc.
Established an atelier in Mutsuzawa Town (a town adjacent to Mobara City) in 1989 and resided there. In addition to oil paintings, he also produced limited edition giclée prints based on his oil paintings, created using an inkjet printer.

The background is a pale moss green.
It depicts a single thistle placed in a paper carton that was destined to be discarded.
The contrast between the inorganic, humble container and the delicate, small flower is serene and beautiful.
