Vintage Handmade Wool Needlepoint Fruit Pillow, Black Ground Apple Design

A handworked wool needlepoint pillow featuring an abundant apple and foliage still life against a deep black ground — the classic Dutch fruit composition reinterpreted in the French and English country manner.  The apples are shaded in soft rose, coral, ivory, and pale celadon, framed by curling leaves in olive, sage, dusty blue, and warm brown. Every stitch is worked by hand in wool yarn on canvas; the tonal shading and slight irregularities in stitch direction confirm it’s handmade rather than machine-produced. The black ground makes the fruit read almost luminous.  At 12” x 16.5” it’s a true lumbar size — the right proportion to break up a row of square pillows, or to sit at the small of your back in a reading chair. Lovely on a bergère, a slipcovered linen sofa, a window seat, or layered into a bed with ticking and toile.
