【Detailed Description (Quoted)】
This bronze pen tray is modeled after the dragon and cicada motif found on Tōtetsu-zenmon-so (Early Western Zhou Dynasty, circa 1000 BCE), one of the rare artifacts among the Sumitomo family's collection of ancient Chinese bronzes housed at the Sen-oku Hakubutsukan (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City). Since ancient times, the cicada has been a symbol of nobility, and its motif was used to decorate ritual vessels. So (altar/tray), a form of ritual vessel, was a cooking utensil. The actual item measures 18.8 cm in height and 41.8 cm in length. This item, however, was sculpted by Mr. Kobayashi Miharu, a judge for the Nitten Exhibition, for use as a pen tray.
