Antique Victorian Bristol Satin Glass Vase Hand Painted Enamel Flowers 13.25 In

Decorated one raised petal at a time — this is Victorian parlor glass made the slow way. A tall hand-blown vase in opaque satin art glass, shading from soft opal white at the crimped rim down to pale sky blue at the foot. The floral work is applied in heavy raised enamel: pink wild roses and bellflowers, pale yellow blossoms and berry clusters, bronze and gilt leaves outlined in rows of tiny pink enamel beads, with fine sepia tendrils trailing around the body. The rim is hand-crimped into a ruffled fan and the underside retains an unpolished pontil area. Held to the light the glass shows small seed bubbles throughout, original to the period hand-blowing process. The vase is unmarked, as most Bristol-type opal glass is. Based on form, decoration, and construction it is attributed to a late Victorian glasshouse, circa 1890 to 1910, most likely Bohemian. No firm maker attribution is claimed. Measurements: 13 1/4 in. tall, 4 1/4 in. across the ruffled rim, 3 1/4 in. base diameter, 2 lb 6 oz. Condition: Very Good. Small losses to the raised pink enamel on several petals, scattered dark specks and light soiling including in the rim crimps, and light wear to the gilt on the leaves. No chips or cracks observed.
