Thank you for viewing.

Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) was from Neijiang, Sichuan. His given name was Yuan, courtesy name Jiyuan, and he also went by the pseudonyms Daqian Jushi and Da Feng Tang. He received his early art education from his mother, Zeng Youzhen (1861-1936), and later studied calligraphy, painting, and poetry with Zeng Xi (1861-1930) and Li Ruiching (1867-1920) in Shanghai. Zhang Daqian's life is adorned with many legends. He studied dyeing and weaving in Japan, then entered a monastery, and later, amidst war, went to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang to copy murals. In 1931, he made a short visit to Japan as a representative of the Exhibition of Chinese Paintings from the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties. In 1933, he served as a professor of art at Chuo University. In 1936, Shanghai Zhonghua Book Company published Zhang Daqian's Paintings, with an introduction by Xu Beihong, who praised him as a once-in-500-years painter. After 1949 (Republic of China year 38), he moved abroad and held painting exhibitions in various Asian and European countries, as well as the United States, becoming a globally renowned master of Chinese painting representing the 20th century. From 1976 (Republic of China year 65) onwards, he settled in Taiwan and spent his later years at Maya Jingshe.
