[Traditional Craft: Kyo-Uchiwa]
Characterized by a sashi-e (inserted handle) structure where the handle and the fan surface are made separately and then joined. Most common uchiwa fans have the handle and fan surface integrated, with the handle made first, then paper applied to finish.
The 50 to 100 thin bamboo ribs are handmade using carefully selected domestic materials such as Tamba bamboo, Echizen and Yao handmade kozo paper, and Tsuga or cedar for the handles.
Kyo-uchiwa, also known as Miyako-uchiwa, originated from Goshou-uchiwa (palace fans) used by aristocrats during the Edo period, having been transmitted to Japan from China via Korea. They were used not only for cooling but also to block wind and light, prevent dust, and as decorative items to conceal the face.
[Kanjo Yamashita]
A Japanese painter from Kagawa Prefecture, he specialized in painting carp. His real name was Sekitaro. Born in 1910, he graduated from the advanced course at Kyoto Municipal School of Painting and studied under Shunkyo Yamamato and Shuka Takahashi. He passed away in Kyoto on June 14, 1991, at the age of 80.
