The fan surface features a subdued bamboo (sasa) design, and the unique wave shape (or shell shape) where the main ribs curve is a distinctive characteristic. Kyoto sensu is a designation that can only be used for fans where the fan surface, ribs, and finishing are all done in Kyoto and its vicinity, and they are made through a division of labor by skilled artisans.
