Vintage Barro Negro (black clay) Dona Rosa Oaxaca Mexico

Vintage Barro Negro (black clay) pottery from the famous workshop of Doña Rosa in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico.  Doña Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto (1900–1980) is legendary for inventing the technique that gives Oaxacan black clay its signature metallic sheen.  Unlike traditional matte gray pottery, these pieces are polished with a quartz stone before firing at a lower temperature to achieve a deep black, mirror-like finish.  The inscription on the base—Doña Rosa Coyotepec Oaxaca Mexico—is a hallmark of her studio. Her descendants continue to operate the workshop and use this signature today.
