1974 DD51 on the Chitose Line, Numanohata - Uenae, with Mt. Tarumae in the background
Mt. Tarumae is an active stratovolcano with a height of 1,041m, located on the southern shore of Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido. It is characterized by its distinctive lava dome and is a popular hiking spot. From the 7th station parking lot, you can reach the summit (East Peak) in about an hour and enjoy a 360-degree panorama of Lake Shikotsu and the Pacific Ocean. Due to ongoing volcanic activity, access to some areas around the East Peak may be restricted.
Features: The lava dome, formed during the 1909 eruption, is known for its pudding-like shape. Fumaroles and geothermal activity can still be observed within the summit crater.
Spectacular Views: From near the summit, you can overlook the Shikotsu Blue of Lake Shikotsu, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding mountains.
Climbing: It takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour from the 7th station hut to reach the summit, offering an accessible yet authentic mountain climbing experience.
