1973, Nichiho Main Line, Komarugawa Bridge, Sleeper Limited Express Fuji
〖Sleeper Limited Express Fuji〗
Fuji began service on October 1, 1964, between Tokyo and Oita. In October of the following year, its route was extended to Nishi-Kagoshima Station (now Kagoshima-Chuo Station) via the Nichiho Main Line, making it Japan's longest-running regular passenger train, covering 1,574.2 km between Tokyo and Nishi-Kagoshima in over 24 hours. In October 1980, the operating section was shortened to Miyazaki Station, and in March 1990, it was changed to Minami-Miyazaki Station. However, due to a continued decline in ridership, it was shortened to Oita Station in November 1997. In March 2005, it began operating coupled with Hayabusa between Tokyo and Moji. In its later years, passenger occupancy rates were low. According to JR Kyushu, the average occupancy rate in fiscal year 2007 was about 20% (about one-fourth of the rate in 1989), with the average daily ridership decreasing to around one hundred people. The train was discontinued along with Hayabusa on March 14, 2009.
