For koshirae (sword mountings), iaido swords, shirasaya (plain wooden scabbards), test cutting, etc.

Users who practice iaido have reported that these are easy to use.
Made from susudake (smoked bamboo). Aged for about 5 years.

Susudake aged for 3 years or more is considered particularly good for Japanese sword mekugi. While it has been smoked, it is still strong even if not smoked.
The smoked color is preferred to match the color of the samegawa (rayskin) when the mekugi is inserted into the koshirae.

Bamboo mekugi also serve to absorb shock during cutting, reducing stress on the blade, tsuka (hilt), and habaki (blade collar).
Aged bamboo has moderate flexibility, making it less likely to break.
Even if it does break, the bamboo fibers remain, making it harder for the blade to come loose.

Mekugi for shirasaya are designed to be gradually thinner at one end, so they need to be shaved to fit the mekugi hole.
As this is a natural material, there will be variations in color and grain.

The mekugi have been soaked in tsubaki oil (camellia oil) for maintenance to give them flexibility.
The oil may seep out onto the envelope when packed (see image 4).
