Edo period, mid-period, Satsuma domain lord Shimazu family, 720,000 koku, 9,000 koku era, original song, daimyo, high-ranking samurai use, battle helmet, antique item
Thank you for viewing my Mercari listing. This item is an authentic Japanese military helmet (jin-gasa) from the mid-Edo period, belonging to a high-ranking samurai of the Shimazu clan, the rulers of Satsuma and a dominant force in Kyushu. The Shimazu clan, with an official stipend of 729,000 koku, was said to have actual revenues exceeding 900,000 koku, second only to the Maeda clan of Kaga. The helmet features a lacquered exterior, a prominent decorative 八幡座 (Hachiman-za, a type of helmet crest), the Shimazu family crest (a circle with a cross), and rear fittings, all exuding a dignified presence and hinting at a rich historical background. The approximate dimensions are 38 cm in width and 34 cm in depth. For those interested in such magnificent jin-gasa from the mid-Edo period, used by high-ranking samurai, I hope you will consider acquiring this museum-quality piece and experience its imposing atmosphere. Jin-gasa from daimyo families, dating back approximately 250 years, have become increasingly rare collectibles in recent years.
