(Tassels are cords attached to the pommel's lanyard loop on military swords. They were passed through the wrist to prevent the sword from falling out when drawn and also served as decoration indicating rank and affiliation.)
Command swords were ceremonial swords used in drills and ceremonies (they are safe replicas without blades).
The retaining catch is normal, and the sword slides in and out smoothly with a satisfying click.
