This is a Choshu tsuba with intricate openwork carving of auspicious plant motifs.
Saikan Gayu refers to enduring severe winter, symbolizing a noble spirit even in adversity, and representing integrity and steadfastness. It is used in celebrations, but its original meaning is strongly associated with a friend who demonstrates true worth in harsh environments.
Vertical Maru-gata (round shape), Iron base, Nikubori (relief carving) and Ji-sukashi (ground openwork), Kakumimi (squared rim) with small niku (relief).
