Description
【Rare Item】Kogai, a fitting for a Japanese sword.

A kogai is a type of sword fitting used as the handle for a small blade (kodachi) that is inserted into the saya (scabbard) of a Japanese sword.
In the center of the image, the family crest Maru ni Migi Sangai Matsu (Three Pine Trees in a Circle) is inlaid in gold.
The base metal uses a technique called Nanako-ji, which creates a fine granular pattern resembling fish roe.
From the Edo period onwards, kogai developed more as a decorative element to enhance the appearance of the entire koshirae (sword mounting) rather than for practical use.
