Kiho Jiro Hikima Wood Carving Bear, Face Carving, 1999, Yakumo
This is a wood carving of a bear by Jiro Hikima, a master craftsman from Yakumo, Hokkaido.
This is a late-period work from 1999, and pieces from this era are rare.
The piece is made from onko (Japanese yew) wood, showcasing its beautiful grain. It's a smaller size, perfect for displaying on a desk or shelf.
Although it's a late-period, small piece, the carving is excellent and conveys a sense of power.
As is common with Hikima's onko works, this piece has a crack. This is not due to being dropped but is a characteristic of the wood. The crack may widen or even close up over time. Some people repair cracks, but many artists prefer to leave them as is, considering them part of the piece's charm.
As I am not a dealer, the price is likely lower than what you would find at an antique shop.
Dimensions are approximately: Height 10 cm, Width 13 cm, Depth 7 cm.
Shipping will be on weekends.
Although the item is in my possession, as it belongs to an acquaintance, please allow some time for responses to inquiries.
