Te-no-uchi refers to the hand movements used to create the correct blade trajectory in Kendo and Iaido. In Kendo and Iaido, Te-no-uchi is the action of the hands and forearms that allows for accurate, fast, and powerful strikes with the monouchi (sweet spot) of the sword or bamboo sword. It is essential basic training for mastering techniques such as saki-no-sen and go-no-sen, and for achieving a free sword with sharpness and clarity.

To train Te-no-uchi at home, even while watching TV in the living room, I devised and created this small sword made of cast aluminum. It weighs approximately 900g, similar to a Japanese sword, and is about 63cm long, making it short enough to avoid hitting the ceiling in apartments with low ceilings. I also experimented with the grip, making it neither too thick nor too thin, allowing for some play in the Te-no-uchi before gripping it firmly along the blade's path. With this, I can swing it freely in my living room or hallway without any problems. Furthermore, by repeating the movements shown in attached images ① and ② with one hand at a time whenever you have a moment, you can train your wrists and Te-no-uchi.
